Astronomical Adventure

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 10, 2007, 2:01 PM
The Geminids meteor shower is happening this Friday night, at about 16:45 UTC (10:15pm Indian time/+5:30GMT). This is one of the most "reliable" meteor showers, with a maximum burst of 160 meteors per minute at it's peak hour (the time above). You can see it these days (although with a less intensity) too.

~ParvezAnsari, another friend of ours, and I are going to from about 7pm and going to stay there till dawn. We'll be taking along a lot of equipment (Canon 400D + lenses, my EQ-2 m=135/f=1000 telescope w/ 400D adapter, a camcorder, a couple of laptops, a few more cameras probably, and lots of other junk) so any alien abductions will be thoroughly documented. And by alien abductions, I mean us bagging us a few greys! :D

Should be an awesome night in the hills - away from light and air pollution. Lots of warm food and drink to keep us alive. A good campfire - a dare is going on who can light a fire without using matches/lighter). And of course, all the snakes and scorpions will keep our adrenaline going.

More info on the shower and when/where to watch it: [link]

Maybe in the summer, I will be going deep into the desert (Rann of Kutch [link]) and do some good astrophotography there. There have been numerous reports of seeing floating balls of light at night in the desert. Might be fun to stake it out if someone is willing to join me.

Of all the journals that appeared on my list today, this one is the most interesting. But at 10:15pm in India, it would be much later where I live and I don't have what it takes to stay up late

Last time we had a meteor shower was years ago...We didn't see it because a different light show was filling up the sky, a powerful thunderstorm :raincloud:

You can probably get a (less intense) glimpse a day earlier at around 10pm your time. It won't be 160/minute but would be still better than nothing.

And hopefully I'll be posting some photos of the shower. :)

Yes, I can imagine it right now. A large angular space ship folds its wings and lands right in front of us. The front landing ramp opens and a dark clad figure in plastic-like armor comes down. He has a heavy breathing problem. He says: "Impressive. The lens is with you, but you're not an astronomer yet!"

Btw, guess what! IT STARTED BECOMING SERIOUSLY CLOUDY!!!! Has been for more than 35 hours. I'm afraid if it stays like this, I'll miss the meteor shower. :(

Just like what happened to me years back :(

On a different note, your edited "Hunter 2" deviation looks better now. I couldn't full-view it for some reason, but I can still see the change

Glad you like the new Hunter. I'll have to re-upload it, it seems. dA was sucking last night. Btw, sky is clear. We're going to go scout out the observation site today.
